Remember our little announcement in November? Well here's a brief update regarding Hannah and my re-branding adventures...

Our new company, The Weaver House, will launch in the next few weeks and we're simply frazzled with excitement. Look forward to a Farewell TGIH and a riveting countdown to the new launch, beginning soon.

Thickly Settled // a year in photos

Last summer, before Justin and my year-long adventure on the east coast began, I decided to think big for the following year's holiday presents. I planned to take a photo a day for one year and bind them together for my nearest and dearest when the year was over. And I did. Thickly Settled serves as both a personal diary of my year on the east coast as well as a tribute to those who helped me make it through. :) You'll see lots of dogs, snow, weddings, food, strangers, cities, forests, family, and friends, most never posted on the blog or shown before. A photo every day turned out to be a harder task than this grouchy hermit had anticipated, but the task was a constant reminder to keep my eyes open every day and to be grateful for everyone and everything in my life.

Our family Christmas Eves are legendary. Food of all shapes, colors and tastes. Trees decked out as glitzy as the gals are. Practical jokes, mad gossip and gag gifts aplenty. Oh, and enough rough-housing, drink swillin' and ciggie smoking to bring the house down. The tradition has always been that there is no tradition (unless you count carol singing, over-eating and general mass mayhem). Anything goes! Well, maybe it's tamed down a bit since the sixties... Though we'll miss the gaggle this year, we love knowing that even from afar, the legend continues. xo

My brilliant sister and brother-in-law have done it again, folks... they've taken their holiday movie tradition to a whole new level this year with a spoofy, side-splitting, fun-loving dark comedy in music video form. You may remember when we launched Kiyoshi's site earlier this year... since then I've been stalking my mailbox for his woolie-filled packages to shoot for his portfolio. The saddest part is having to mail them back! Each hand felted creation is intricately crafted and so incredibly realistic that it's hard to spot the real animals from the wool ones on his farming blog! If you're running out of ideas for presents this year, jot Kiyoshi an email to set up a gift certificate for a personal wool creation. A sweet little pop up shoppe has opened its doors downtown and I urge you all to go check out what people are calling the new "manthropology". Hannah and I swung by Boys' Fort last week to shoot their amazing space and wares... mustache wax, air plants, bowties, furniture, art, bags, vintage treasures, and woodworking galore await you. We each snagged a couple river driftwood plaques with air plants in them for our living rooms and had to flee the scene before buying the place out... Thank you Rolfe and Jake for the genius curating and incredibly friendly service! You'll find shop directions and details here.

Shooting double exposures with 35mm film this year has been really fun, as it's impossible to predict how the moments will align to make something completely new. How lovely are these photos by Harry Callahan? Snapped in Chicago in the early 50s, he'd sometimes match bodies (typically his wife, Eleanor) with random buildings and nature.

Worlds are colliding in my neck of the woods. You may know Hannah, my twinny who stars in our weekly Friday TGIH and assists in a ton of what I do. In addition to what she does for Steep Street, she sews, she crafts, she collects, and she blogs. A recent brainwave brought on by our newfound proximity has begun to connect her array of creative skills with my own in a cloud of crazy inspiration.... with the sparkly plan to join forces as one company.

As we plan our joint (ad)venture, Hannah will be moving from her own blog, Ola Collection, over this-away, to take the first important step in blending our worlds. As is painfully evident, I'm a rather poor blogger and post only my own work... and sparsely, at that. Hannah will be sharing all kinds of design, photography, and style inspiration that reflects the heart and soul of what we do, who we are, and what we hope to bring to you with our new business.

In the last couple crazy weeks, I haven't unpacked, or moved into my new house, or gone on a jog, or written the stack of postcards I've been starting at since we left to drive cross country. I've been sitting in Hannah and Alex's hot little cottage, obsessed over designing the perfect website for Delbarr. And it was the most fun I've had in a looong time.

Touch down: Portland. As excited as I am to be here and for all that lies ahead, I'm already feeling nostalgic for our old home, friends, family, and life back east. It's as though they are already taking on that special quality of a memory that is too sweet to stay in color. It fades to black and white and joins the ranks of the other sigh-inducing past gems I've accumulated so far in my walk through life.

After a dizzying journey with Han and the pups, (filled with anthem-screaming, bed sheets-stealing, french fry-munching, business plan-making, and all manner of sweatpants-clad silliness) we gratefully rolled into my new home; the farm we have yet to name. Until Justin and our crate of homey items arrives, I'm setting up camp in Hannah's kitchen, feverishly returning emails and wrapping up web projects before a triple header of weddings begins on Friday.

Crazy never felt so good.

Everything is happening so fast. When this kind of summer whirlwind happened as kids, Hannah and I always broke things into phases to try to wrap our minds around it more easily. Phase one: swim season. Phase two: visit Grandma and Grandpa in Wisconsin. Phase three: get ready for school. Like that. In less than a week I'll be flying west for my last August wedding. Less than a week after that I'll be driving west again with Hannah and two drooling dogs. And then the real fun begins. I'm going to try to post a photo every day or so as I head into all of these new phases... a new home, a new town, a new business line, and a bunch of new adventures, so stay tuned.

When people first see Kiyoshi's work, they're hit with a range of emotion. Shock. Curiosity. Disbelief. Intrigue. Excitement. My first impression led me to comment something along the lines of "what on earth IS that???" It's detailed. It's unique. It's awe-inspiring. And it's all wool. With a tiny set of tools and an incredible amount of creativity and dexterity, Kiyoshi brings to life a myriad of animals just itching to be named, admired, and given a story. He's now taking custom orders for pet portraits, table centerpieces, installation work, and is game for any idea you throw his way.

Since the snow disappeared, I've shed my greyscale ensembles, ditched my snow boots, and embraced my newfound rainbow-vision by implementing sun-filled naps, adventure walks, and a green-thumbing without looking back. It's as though I was blind all winter and all of a sudden my sight returned... and now I'm walking around all squinty and smiling.
